Caesar Ciphers

Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar (100 BC – 44 BC) is said to have invented these for his secret communications with his generals. He shifted secret messages three letters along.

A to D,    B to E,    C to F … simple, see?

Our Verdict: Far too simple – no wonder he was assassinated

To make these ciphers harder, you can shift forwards or backwards any number of spaces.

Our Verdict: Simple, easy – still not very safe

Top tip: to improve safety, change the shift each time
